Not only is Amsterdam the capital of the Netherlands but it is also the largest and one of the most historic cities in the country. Flat with a clear, crisp atmosphere, Amsterdam is perfectly navigable by bicycle, the transportation of choice for many Amsterdammers, or on foot. Bicycles are easily available for rent and the city's historic canals are well worth a sightseeing ride.

A culture of art appreciation pervades Amsterdam. Amsterdam has a broad spectrum of recreational and cultural sights that range from fascinating old buildings, like the Oude Kerk, to oddities such as the Hash Marihuana Museum.

Museums are the main tourist attraction in Amsterdam. Everyone knows the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum, but there is much, much more. Amsterdam has over fifty museums which attract many millions of visitors every year

Two of the city's museums are each dedicated to a world famous Dutch painter, the Van Gogh Museum and Rembrandt House. The Rijksmuseum hosts a collection of 17th century Dutch artists including Rembrandt, Vermeer and Frans Hals. Keeping with the rich history of the city, the very home in which Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazi's during the 1942 occupation is open to visitors. The girl's famous diary is preserved and on display.

Recommended sightseeing tours.

  1. Walking tour of "dark" Amsterdam (2 hours)
This evening tour takes us on a guided tour of the 'Wallen' or 'Red Light District' and includes a visit to the Prostitute Information Centre.
A tour through 'Dark' Amsterdam can be rather illuminating, as it centres on the famous Red Light District. The excursion starts at a prostitute information centre, where you will have a drink while a former prostitute explains the system and you can ask any questions you may have. The visit to the 'Wallen'' (the Red Light District) is perhaps the most interesting part of the tour. You will see for yourself the oldest profession of the world. The tour continues past interesting monuments and through old streets, one of which is the well-known 'Zeedijk', once one of the most dangerous streets of Amsterdam - where Seamen could be found looking for local amusement. Nowadays this is a safe area, full of lively Dutch pubs and restaurants and the shady bars of yester-year are long gone. Safety during this excursion is not a concern, as a reliable guide throughout will accompany you.
  2. The 100 highlights cruise
Enjoy the best cruise through 17th Century Amsterdam and appreciate the city's elegant architecture.

You will see historic residential buildings, including the famous Anne Frank's House, and on past the renowned boat houses before returning to Holland International where the tour ends. The windows on the launches slide open to facilitate better photography.
