Los Angeles is the USA's second largest city after New York. It has been called everything from La La Land to Tinseltown but is most commonly known simply as LA. Sprawling along the Pacific coast of southern California, its coastline stretches 122km (76 miles) from Malibu to Long Beach. Inland, the city fills a vast, flat and once arid basin ringed by the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountains.
Disneyland may be the city's major attraction, but LA is also home to world-renowned cultural institutions from the Museum of Contemporary Art to the LA Philharmonic and the stunning Getty Museum.
LA is exuberant - there are few places in the world where the phrase ‘Express Yourself' is taken so literally. Hippy health fanatics exist happily alongside some of the most glamorous and wealthy people in the world. Most visitors come to enjoy world-class shops and restaurants, lie on beaches bathed in almost constant sunshine and simply to people watch.
San Francisco in California is a spectacular peninsula that is surrounded by water on three sides and San Francisco grows from the inside out. The modern city of San Francisco is visually spectacular, with many world-famous steep hills offering incredible views of San Francisco Bay.
San Francisco is regularly classed as one of the top tourist destinations in the world and it is easy to see why. With top attractions such as the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge - which opened in 1937, becoming the longest suspension bridge in the world, Alcatraz island - the 'Rock in the Bay' which was once the most notorious prison in the whole world, housing some of America's most dangerous offenders, Pier 39 on Fisherman's Wharf - a lively bay area with numerous shops, arcades, seafood restaurants, cafés, fairground rides, ocean views and its own colony of sea lions, Lombard Street - probably the world's most crooked street, and of course the famous San Francisco cable cars, which provide cheap and easy access to the whole of San Francisco.
Another major San Francisco tourist attraction is the Hakone Japanese Tea Garden, situated in San Francisco's vast Golden Gate Park. These traditional Japanese gardens provide the most tranquil place in the whole of San Francisco city and cover around five acres, with koi carp ponds, pagodas, drum bridges and a Japanese Tea Room, these exquisite gardens in San Francisco are well worth a visit.
The city of San Francisco is a lively and friendly Californian city, with some highly developed areas, including tall skyscrapers, and contrasting, more traditional districts, such as Chinatown, home to one of the largest Chinese communities outside of Asia. The cosmopolitan city of San Francisco is diverse, open minded, exciting and most of all, enjoyable.
