Happy World Tourism Day, an annual event organised by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (or UNWTO for short).
Tourism and sustainable energy
This year's theme is "Tourism & Sustainable Energy: Powering Sustainable Development". The premise is quite simple, as UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, states: "Hundreds of millions of people around the world depend for income on this energy-intensive sector. Sustainable energy will allow tourism to continue to expand while mitigating its impact on the environment."
The main celebrations will take place in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, Spain, where top experts and policy makers in the field of tourism and energy will hold a think tank. Don't happen to be in Maspalomas today? No problem - join in the celebration by logging on to the World Tourism Day website and checking our the entries in their photo competition or following the hashtag #WTD2012 on twitter.
Want to physically join in? Taylor's University Lakeside Campus is organising an event for tourism students, including talks from industry experts, different immersive competitions, and a variety of stalls to indulge.
