Tibet of the Americas

Explore Bolivia with our tours

Situated in Central America, landlocked Bolivia is often referred to as the ‘Tibet of the Americas’ as it is one of the more remote countries in the region. It shares jurisdiction of Lake Titicaca with Peru in the Andean Mountains; it’s the largest lake in South America and also believed to be the birthplace of the Inca Empire.

Bolivia is the most indigenous country in the Americas with 60% of the population being of pure Native American ancestry. Although the main language is Spanish, 38 indigenous languages are official. Bolivia is home to a vast array of flora and fauna; for instance, there are over 1,000 bird species found in this relatively small nation. With a rich and diverse topography, nature lovers will delight in visits to the Andean Mountains with some of the best hiking trails or the Amazon rain forest which houses a myriad of creatures such as squirrel monkeys and turtles. The Bolivian Amazon is as biologically diverse as the more famous Brazilian Amazon whilst also being a cheaper alternative. Moreover, as the ‘pampas’, a wetland savanna, is part of this Amazon, it makes it easier to spot the wildlife.
